Dr. Wayne Hickory is one of the orthodontists that spearheaded the use of Invisalign clear aligners at OX Orthodontix locations as a universal form of treatment for our patients. For the past 15 years, he has been lecturing on Invisalign both nationally and internationally, expanding the applicability of clear aligner therapy. Alongside our other orthodontist Dr. Selnick, Dr. Hickory has treated over 6,000 patient cases with Invisalign over the last 17 years.

Dr. Hickory has a diverse educational background that has allowed him to expand his knowledge of orthodontics, making him one of the most qualified orthodontists in the Columbia, MD area. After graduating from Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut, Dr. Hickory earned a master’s degree in nutritional science at Boston University, School of Dental Medicine. At the University of Connecticut, School of Dental Medicine, he completed the three-year postdoctoral program in orthodontics, the Doctorate of Dental Medicine, and a Masters of Dental Science.

Once he completed his education as a student of orthodontics, Dr. Hickory then became a faculty member of the orthodontic department at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands and the University of Maryland to share his knowledge with aspiring orthodontists.

Dr. Hickory then went on to become the founder and editor of Praxis, America’s first journal of orthodontic practice management, and now is a part of the amazing team of orthodontists at OX Orthodontix!

Dr. Sandra Selnick is dedicated to staying on the cutting edge of innovative orthodontic treatment in order to provide the best possible treatment results for her patients. Dr. Selnick takes pride in “creating beautiful smiles for all ages” using the latest advancements in orthodontic technology.

As the daughter of a pediatric dentist and a pediatrician, Dr. Selnick was bound to work as a medical professional too! She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree (BS) from the University of Miami before earning her doctoral degree in dentistry (DDS) from the University of Maryland where she graduated with special recognition from the American Association of Orthodontists. After completing a hospital-based General Practice Residency with the VA Medical Center in Baltimore, Dr. Selnick's interest in orthodontics led her back to the University of Maryland for three years of specialty training resulting in a Certificate in Orthodontics. She concurrently pursued her research in orthodontic computer analysis, earning a Master's degree (MS) in oral biology.

Before joining the OX Orthodontix team, Dr. Selnick was in private practice and worked as a staff orthodontist at Children's Hospital at Washington Hospital Center. Now she is wonderful addition to the team of orthodontists at OX and has been a leader in using Invisalign to treat most of the patients that come to our offices.

Dr. Selnick is also dedicated to giving back to her community and her strong ties in the Howard County area are a source of pride in Dr. Selnick's professional and private life. When she is not in the office, Dr. Selnick is active in her two children's school activities and cheers them on in swimming competitions throughout the state.

Dr. Mitra Derakhshan has worked with Invisalign for over ten years and has demonstrated her expertise with the clear aligner system by being published in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, giving seminars in orthodontics, and lecturing on orthodontic topics worldwide.

Before Dr. Derakhshan joined the OX Orthodontix team, she received her dental degree (DDS) at the University of Michigan and her Master's Degree (MS) and Certificate in Orthodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Outside of the office, Dr. Derakhshan enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, exploring the outdoors, and watching a romantic comedy movie once in awhile.

Dr. Jennifer Smith joined the OX Orthodontix team with a background of valuable training and experience treating patients of all ages. She is proud to now be a part of OX Orthodontix, creating beautiful smiles and welcoming newcomers to our patient family!

Dr. Smith graduated Magna Cum Laude from Temple University with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a minor in Spanish and then went on to receive her Doctorate of Dental Medicine Degree from the University of Pennsylvania, with honors.

During her time at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Smith received several awards and was selected to complete a research fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in the Facial Reconstruction Center. This fellowship provided her with the opportunity to assist with the orthodontic treatment of patients with various craniofacial abnormalities and syndromes. She attributes her desire to pursue a career in orthodontics, in part, to this incredible experience.

After practicing general dentistry for several years, Dr. Smith then returned to the University of Pennsylvania to earn a specialty certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Since completing this training, Dr. Smith has practiced in both orthodontic and pediatric dental offices in Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey, and Maryland, providing comprehensive care to children, teens, and adults.

Dr. Smith originally hails from Philadelphia, PA, but currently resides in Howard County with her husband, Robert, and six year old son. When she’s away from the office, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, yoga, and cooking.

To have the best and healthiest smile you can have.

Get it by relying on orthodontists' expertise, which comes from their extensive education. After graduating from dental school, orthodontists go on for another two or more years of education just in orthodontics at an accredited orthodontic residency program. Only after this formal education can one be called an orthodontist. Only orthodontists are accepted for membership in the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). Selecting a member of the AAO for orthodontic care is the public's assurance that they are selecting an orthodontist.

To get the specialized treatment you deserve.

You trust your heart to a cardiologist, your skin to a dermatologist, your knees to an orthopedist. Like these specialists who study their specialty areas after their general medical education, orthodontists devote additional years of study to orthodontics after they graduate from dental school. And like their medical counterparts, orthodontists limit their practices to their specialty area. Orthodontists have in-depth experience in orthodontic care. They use their knowledge and skills to help you get the best results possible.

To solve the problem.

You may see six crooked front teeth. The orthodontist sees the cause of crooked teeth in three dimensions. Orthodontists use their education, experience and expertise to delve deep to discover the root of your orthodontic problem. Armed with a diagnosis that takes all factors into account, orthodontists can plan your solution—one that delivers a healthy, attractive smile and a lasting result. Orthodontists take your unique needs and wishes into consideration, too, when recommending the right treatment option for you. Orthodontists have knowledge of the full range of orthodontic appliance "tools." They know what to use and when to use it because they work with these tools every day.
