Early Treatment

Children's Orthodontics in Ellicott City

At OX Orthodontix, we believe everyone deserves a beautiful, healthy smile that lasts a lifetime. That's why our orthodontists and highly trained team of orthodontic specialists work to treat every patient on an individual level, designing personalized treatment plans that perfectly suit each patient's unique orthodontic needs. Our mission is to help our patients achieve a beautiful smile for the long term – and sometimes, that means starting treatment early.

How Early Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

Following the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), we recommend parents have their children visit an orthodontist for their first appointment by age 7. At this age, the back bite is established, allowing us to evaluate both front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. This lets our orthodontists spot any current orthodontic problems or problems that may develop down the road.

Keep in mind that while we recommend an orthodontic evaluation at this early stage, we may not actually elect to start treatment right away. More often, our orthodontists will decide to wait and monitor your child's growth for the ideal time to start orthodontic treatment. In some cases, though, we do decide that it's best to start treatment early.

Why Choose Early Orthodontic Treatment?

For some orthodontic conditions, starting treatment early is the best way to ensure a healthy smile. This is because when we start treatment early, our children’s orthodontists can influence the growth and development of the teeth, jaws, and even the facial structure in a way that sets the stage for a healthy smile. We may elect for early treatment if any of the following conditions are present:

     ● Underbites
     ● Crossbites
     ● Facial asymmetries
     ● Overbites
     ● Narrow jaws
     ● Developing crowding

Your Early Phase Invisalign Experts in Ellicott City & Clarksville

At OX Orthodontix, we're committed to utilizing the most advanced orthodontic technologies to make any phase of treatment as convenient as possible and that includes early treatment. As your local experts in Clarksville and Ellicott City orthodontics, we’re proud to offer Invisalign to our early orthodontic treatment patients. While most offices only use braces for early orthodontic care, our orthodontists’ experience allow us to also offer Invisalign as an option to patients of all ages, giving you and your child more flexibility in orthodontic treatment.

Dr. Hickory and Dr. Selnick are among the first children’s orthodontists to use Invisalign for early phase treatment. Having employed Invisalign as an early phase treatment for over 5 years, along with product improvements, has allowed our orthodontists to treat an increasing number of pediatric patients.

For an increasing number of families, Invisalign is the preferred orthodontic treatment for early phase because it requires fewer office visits and broken braces and poking wires are never an issue.

Early phase orthodontic treatment is primarily orthopedic in nature, typically started at the AAO-recommended ages of 7 to 9 years old when facial growth is aggressive and there is a mixture of baby teeth and permanent teeth in the mouth.
